Upper Darby Students Honored for Black History Month

Students Honored for Black History Month Poems 

Five students from the Upper Darby School District were recognized at Wednesday night’s township council meeting for their poetry submissions in honor of Black History Month.

During the meeting, four of the five students in attendance read their poems aloud. Ed Brown, Mayor of Upper Darby, acknowledged the students’ achievements and presented each of them with an inscribed plaque. 

LaRae, a fifth grader from Aronomink Elementary School, earned first place for her poem, I Don’t See Color. 

Gbalia, also a fifth grader from Aronomink Elementary School, was named runner-up for his poem about Harriet Tubman. 

Faith, a fifth grader from Garrettford Elementary School, was recognized for her poem Chasing the North Star. Another fifth-grade student from Garrettford Elementary School, also named Faith, was honored for her poem If Only We Were Brave Enough. 

Finally, Karmelo, a fourth grader from Hillcrest Elementary School, was recognized for his poem, The Universe Loves Love. 

The winning submissions were selected by the Township Council’s Community Engagement Committee.
