Snow and Ice Removal Reminders

Snow & Ice Removal Reminders

Winter weather is part of life in Upper Darby Township, and keeping sidewalks safe is a shared responsibility of all property owners. Uncleared snow and ice can lead to slips, falls, injuries, and blocked access for pedestrians, including children, seniors, and people with disabilities. Safe and accessible sidewalks are critical for our community.

Important Reminders

  • Properties with SEPTA stops and school bus stops must take extra care to keep sidewalks clear and accessible.

  • Corner properties are responsible for clearing sidewalks along all street frontages.

  • Properties with a fire hydrant must ensure snow is cleared around the hydrant, so it remains accessible to the Upper Darby Fire Department in case of an emergency.

  • Snow may not be shoveled back into the street.

What the Code Requires
Per Upper Darby Township Ordinance No. 3096 of 2021, the Township’s Property Maintenance Code requires snow and ice to be removed from sidewalks within 24 hours after snowfall has ceased. A clear path of at least 36 inches wide must be maintained.

Who Is Responsible
Property owners are ultimately responsible for ensuring snow and ice are properly removed from sidewalks adjacent to their property. While tenants, property managers, or agents may perform the work, notices of violation and citations for non-compliance are issued to the property owner. Vacant or unoccupied properties are not exempt from these requirements.

Failure to comply may result in a notice of violation and/or citation. The Township’s goal is timely compliance and clear, accessible sidewalks for all pedestrians.

Thank you for your cooperation in keeping sidewalks clear and accessible throughout Upper Darby Township this winter.
