Upper Darby Township Extends Emergency Support to Local Homeless Shelter and Food Pantry During State Budget Impasse
Upper Darby, PA — October 31, 2025— Upper Darby Township is lending a helping hand to two critical social service organizations during a time of statewide need.
With the ongoing budget impasse at the state level, funding for homeless shelters and food assistance programs across Pennsylvania — including in Delaware County and Upper Darby — has been heavily disrupted. Recognizing the growing crisis, Mayor Edward Brown and Upper Darby Township are stepping in to provide temporary emergency financial support to help sustain essential services for qualified residents and families in need.
Emergency funding will be allocated to the Life Center of Eastern Delaware County, a vital emergency shelter serving individuals and families experiencing homelessness, and Murphy’s Giving Market, a local provider of nutritious meals, groceries, and support services for households facing food insecurity.
“The health and welfare of all our residents have been — and will always remain — our top priority,” said Mayor Edward Brown. “With state funds delayed, it was critical that we act quickly to ensure our most vulnerable neighbors continue to have access to food, shelter, and dignity.”
The Township will provide $46,000 in emergency relief funding from Community Development Block Grant funds. The Life Center of Eastern Delaware County and Murphy’s Giving Market are current subrecipients with agreements in place, which will allow the funds to be dispersed rapidly.
Upper Darby Township will continue to monitor the situation and stands committed to supporting the delivery of critical services to residents.
