Upper Darby Township is seeking a highly experienced and visionary leader to serve as the next Assistant Director of Licenses & Inspections. This is a high-impact opportunity for a dynamic professional ready to take their career to the next level. In this role, you’ll help shape the future of our Township by ensuring effective regulation, streamlined operations, and excellent service delivery. 

The Assistant Director plays a central role in overseeing daily departmental operations, supporting the Director, and leading a diverse team of inspectors, technicians, and administrative staff. From permitting and licensing to code enforcement and emergency coordination, you’ll drive improvements, enhance accountability, and support the community through fair and consistent implementation of Township policies and Pennsylvania code standards. 

You’ll guide complex inspections, manage high-profile code issues, and contribute to strategic planning, budgeting, policy development, and public communication. Your leadership will ensure our Licenses & Inspections Department operates at the highest standard of professionalism, responsiveness, and regulatory excellence. 

We’re looking for someone with at least five (5) years of progressive experience in inspections, permitting, or code enforcement, including two (2) years in a supervisory or managerial role. A deep understanding of municipal code, building and fire safety regulations, and enforcement practices is essential, along with strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills. 

Required certifications (or the ability to obtain within five months of hire) include: 

  • Pennsylvania Building Code Official 

  • ICC Certified Building Official 

  • ICC Commercial Building Inspector 

  • ICC Property Maintenance & Housing Inspector 

Candidates must hold a valid Pennsylvania driver’s license and be able to pass a background check. This is an in-person position based at the Township building—remote or virtual work is not permitted.
