Below is visual explanation of what happens for Recycling during Holiday Weeks Area 1 and Area 2 north of Garrett Road. Residents are urged to review the map in the trash and recycling calendar.

When a holiday falls on a Monday, Monday's trash and recycling route will be picked up on Wednesday of that week.
Area 2, north of Garrett Road, whose recycling is normally picked up on Wednesday will be picked up on Tuesday of the holiday week.
Tuesday's trash and recycling route is not changed.
Area 1, north of Garrett Road, whose recycling is normally picked up on Wednesday will be picked up on Friday of the holiday week.
Friday's trash and recycling route is not changed.

Regular Household Trash Collection Service

Regular Household Trash consists of garbage, rubbish and trash waste material generated in private homes or apartment houses with less than five units. The following items may also be acceptable to Regular Collection, if properly prepared for pick-up.

  • Mattresses/Box springs: Put out with your regular trash, but limited to only one (1) each per collection. Bedding cannot be rain soaked and should be placed in a sealable clear plastic or vinyl mattress bag. Mattress disposal bags are sold at most major retailers and home improvement stores, such as Home Depot, Lowe's, Kmart, and Amazon.com.
  • Grass Clippings: Place in a bag in the trash can, not loose in the can.
  • Carpeting: Cut down to 3 feet in length, rolled up and tied in a bundle. Each bundle should not exceed 40lbs and cannot be rain soaked.
  • Branches: Cut down to 3 feet in length and tied in a bundle. Each bundle should not exceed 40lbs. Branches should not be greater than 4 inches in diameter.
  • Large Glass Items or Broken Glass: Any large glass item such as glass table tops and mirrors should be broken down and placed in a sealed box. To prevent serious injuries, please do not place any broken glass in trash bags.
  • Paint: Latex Paint (water based): Remove lid from can and the paint must be completely dried out. Use kitty litter or a "paint dry" product if needed.
  • Oil based Paint is a hazardous waste and is not acceptable. Check calendar for the location of a hazardous waste dropoff event.
  • Small Furniture Items: Small tables and chairs will be picked up with your regular trash but are limited to only one (1) furniture item per trash collection.

Collection Time: Trash must be out for pick-up no later than 7:00 A.M. on your scheduled trash day. Cans must be removed from the trash line no later than 6:00 P.M.

Trash Can Size: Trash cans should not exceed 32 gallons in size and should not have permanently attached lids. Cans larger than 32 gallons, or cans with attached lids, may not be completely emptied due to the can size or attached lids. Weight limit: The combined weight of a trash can and the trash shall not exceed 40lbs. This includes days when there is excessive amount of rain and the can fills with water. (It's helpful to punch drainage holes in the bottom of your trash can.) The allowable total combined weight per household pick-up is 200lbs.

Recycling Upper Darby Collects:

SINGLE STREAM RECYCLING is defined as the collection of newspapers & paper products; corrugated paper & cardboard; aluminum food & beverage cans; steel & bi-metallic food & beverage cans; plastic products numbered 1, 2, 4, 5 and 7 (no plastic bags) and glass containers, excluded are plate glass, light bulbs, automotive glass, blue glass, porcelain and ceramic products. Ordinance No. 2972 of Upper Darby Township requires all residents to separate from their regular trash and to recycle the following:

NEWSPAPERS & PAPER PRODUCTS

  • Acceptable : Paper Products Newspapers, magazines and periodicals, catalogs, telephone directories, junk mail and paperback books catalogs, magazines and telephone books.
  • Not Acceptable : Plastic bags.
  • Acceptable : Cardboard, paper boxes, corrugated cardboard boxes, egg and cereal cartons, brown paper bags
  • Not Acceptable : Waxed or plastic coated cardboard

ALUMINUM FOOD & BEVERAGE CANS

  • Acceptable : Used beverage cans that are rinsed, clean and dry
  • Not Acceptable : Do not include foil, wrap, trays, plates, etc.

STEEL & BIMETALLIC FOOD & BEVERAGE CANS

  • Acceptable : All steel and "bi-metal" household cans that a magnet will attract that are rinsed, clean and dry
  • Not Acceptable : 55 gallon drums, paint cans, aerosol cans, gasoline and oil cans.

PLASTIC PRODUCTS

  • Acceptable : All plastic food and beverage containers numbered 1, 2, 4, 5 and 7.
  • Not Acceptable : Plastic bags.

GLASS CONTAINERS

  • Acceptable : All glass containers
  • Not Acceptable : Plate glass, light bulbs, automotive glass, blue glass, porcelain and ceramic products.

Yard Waste Collection

Yard Waste is defined as leaves, garden residues, shrubbery and tree trimmings (4 inches or less in diameter and less than 3 feet long), and similar material (no grass clippings). The collection will take place the Week of May 13 and the Week of November 11 on your regular recycling day only. Do not use plastic bags to recycle yard waste. Place in biodegradable paper bags or loose in trash cans without bags.

Yard Waste Drop-Off

Delaware County's Compost Farm is open for yard waste disposal for county residents only from January to September (7:00 am-3:00pm) on the 3rd Wednesday of each month. The Compost Farm is located at: 2300 Concord Rd & Incinerator Rd, Chester, PA 19013. Yard waste is defined as leaves, garden residue, shrubbery and tree trimmings. Nothing can be wider than 4 inches in diameter or longer than 4 feet in length. No Plastic Bags and No Grass Clippings. Proof of residency is required.

Christmas Trees

Christmas Trees will be collected only on the designated recycling day for your area as listed in the calendar. Trees will only be collected if they are free of lights, ornaments, tinsel, tree stands and are not in plastic bags.

Upper Darby Township offers pick-up service for the occasional large household item commonly referred to as Bulk Trash.

Some examples of items that are unsuitable for the Regular Trash Collection include large metal appliances, filing cabinets, air conditioners and TV's. Large furniture such as sectional sofas, sleep sofas and metal framed recliners are also considered Bulk Trash.

There is a fee per item that must be paid prior to pick up. Contact the Department of Public Works at 610-734-7713 with any questions, to obtain a Fee Schedule and to schedule a Bulk Trash pick-up.

The Township will NOT take the following items:

  • Residential "Clean Outs" related to the sale of property or expiration of rental lease agreements.
  • Residential Contractor and Landscape Contractor materials or debris of any kind.
  • Fencing, BBQ grills, portable basketball nets, exercise equipment.
  • Dirt, rocks, concrete, bricks
  • Hazardous waste, metal drums, oil tanks, gas tanks, tires
  • Furnaces, boilers
  • Pianos
