WHEREAS, today, St. Laurence School is celebrating its 100th Year Anniversary;

WHEREAS, St. Laurence School opened its doors in September, 1919 by Father Maurice Cowl and the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary where the sisters began teaching in a one-room farmhouse still under construction;

WHEREAS, by summer of 1920, the first building was built which consisted of four classrooms, an auditorium and a chapel;

WHEREAS, in the 1930ís, a portion of the school building was converted to living quarters for the sisters who taught at St. Laurence;

WHEREAS, in the 1940ís, the school was enlarged and a new upper church, new convent and new rectory were built;

WHEREAS, in 1957, the school was enlarged to include 24 classrooms and a Home and School Association and Catholic Youth Organization were formed;

WHEREAS, in the years that followed, many additions have been made: a kindergarten, a State of the Art Computer Lab as well as a State of the Art Science Lab;

WHEREAS, in the 1990ís, a new Main Office, Research Center and Library were added; air conditioning was installed in many areas of the school and bathrooms have been renovated - all done under the auspices of the Pastors, Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, lay teachers and staff;

WHEREAS, the beautification of St. Laurence continues today, along with the designing of a strong academic program and religious foundation, to lead our children to be successful in the twenty-first century;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that I, Mayor of Upper Darby Township, along with Township Council, do hereby declare October 7, 2018 to be:


in Upper Darby Township and urge all citizens to join with me in congratulating St. Laurence School, students, teachers, administration and parents alike on their 100th Anniversary and recognize the hard work and commitment of all those involved in the school community
