Women's History Month - Michelle Billups

Upper Darby Celebrates Council Secretary Michelle Billups

I am a sister, daughter, aunt and friend, and most importantly, mom to Chris, mom-mom to Noah, Amaya, and Jalissa, and a connector of people.

I grew up in North Philadelphia and moved to Upper Darby in 2006. Initially, I moved to the Township to be closer to my house of worship, Careview Community Church. Now, I would not live anywhere else. I crave the connectedness of community, and in Upper Darby I feel I can truly be of service to my neighbors.

My son became ill at six months with a rare form of croup that caused his windpipe to close. I could not locate resources for him. I became his advocate and was introduced to wonderful people in the helping profession. This was the beginning of my public service. I volunteered and worked at numerous agencies for example, Planned Parenthood, Mazzoni Center, and McLaughlin and Schlass, Esq. I answered phones and assisted parents, students, and patients who needed resources. This strengthened my purpose – the gift of help. This would soon be enhanced by my choice of college and career decisions.

I have a bachelor’s degree from Duquesne University (Go Dukes!) in History. I have furthered my education by obtaining a Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice and Master’s Degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Health Administration and I am currently working on my LSW. I am employed at Temple University as a Medical Case Manager with the Medicine Group Practice where I assist patients to achieve stability despite their illness. I have had different positions in which I have also been able to assist people with the difficulties that life creates. Some of the positions that I have held are: Counselor at Planned Parenthood, HIV tester and counselor at the Mazzoni Center, and HIV Case Manager Supervisor at Philadelphia Fight.

I am a huge sports fan, my favorite sport – Football - Go Birds! I enjoy watching all Philly sports teams!

I believe there is strength in being a peacemaker and strength (at times) in silence.

Upper Darby is home.
