Mayor's Public Announcement

During the course of the last year I attended numerous town meetings. At these meetings many residents expressed their thanks to the Township for the recycling program. In the meetings North of Garrett Road it was clear that the weeks where a holiday occurred and the recycling in this area is skipped, the residents are not happy.

I hope the public understands that changing the trash and recycling schedule for a community the size of Upper Darby can be a complicated matter. After these town meetings I asked Township staff to review the situation and offer suggestions.

Yesterday, February 15, 2011, I approved a recommendation for Request for Proposal (RFP) seeking a logistic analysis and recommendation on how the current Township's trash and recycling program can be improved in the most cost efficient manner.

I have also approved a Request for Proposal to review and evaluate the Township's Street Sweeping Program. Here again the goal is for a logistic analysis and recommendation to improve the current program in the most effective and cost efficient manner.

I would like to advise Council on the status of the Police Substation at 710 Long Lane. As you know, I met with residents of the Stonehurst area at the building location last summer. At that time I made a commitment that the building would be operational.

I wish to inform you that effective March 1, 2011 the Township plans to staff the building daily from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM. It is our plan that the building will be staffed on a rotating basis with staff members from the Community Development Department, Weed and Seed Program, the Welcome Center, the Community Police Program and the Fire Department. This staffing will be fluid and other members of the Mayor's staff will be assigned as the need develops. In addition, I plan to hold a series of open drop by sessions at the substation with the dates and times to be announced shortly. The substation will also be available to Council members who wish to meet with their constituents on a prearranged schedule.

The last topic I want to mention is the Administration's commitment to the hiring of a Community Police Coordinator who will work out of the police substation at 710 Long Lane. The job description and requirements for this position will be posted on the Township's web site within the next several days. I plan to act on filling this position as quickly as possible.
