Time Sensitive Sanitation Update from Mayor Keffer

Good afternoon, this is Mayor Barbarann Keffer with a critically important message for Upper Darby residents regarding Public Health, Public Safety and the current COVID -19 outbreak.

I am here today with TWU Local 234 Business Agent George Bannon and TWU Section Chairman for Upper Darby municipal employees Bill Harrison. Due to a recent outbreak in the Sanitation Division and in accordance with guidance from the Governor and the CDC, we have made the joint decision to quarantine the entire Sanitation Division for two weeks and going through August 21.

The decision was not made lightly but it was made in the best interest of our township workforce and our township residents. It is very important that everyone understand that the health and safety of our township employees and residents is our primary concern. We will get through this with the best outcomes if we stick together.

Since the outbreak in March, we have taken every possible safety measure and done our best to observe all guidance and protocols, however the nature of this global pandemic is such that these steps are now required.

Please know that we have already begun to formulate a contingency plan to collect trash for the next two weeks. We will announce those details on Monday. Please stay tuned and be patient and compassionate as we all do our best to manage these difficult circumstances.

Again, this was a decision made in close consultation with our township employees and their union leaders. Regular trash pick-up will resume with a new schedule on Monday, August 24th. This will give us enough time to have a healthy reset for our employees and residents.

I want to thank George and Bill and all of the Public Works employees for their hard work and dedication throughout this process. These are strange days with difficult decisions and I truly appreciate your patience and understanding. Thank you. Stay safe and stay healthy.
