As you are aware, Upper Darby Township has recently experienced a tragic homicide, as well as shootings, in our community. The Upper Darby Township Police Department is in the process of conducting a thorough but challenging investigation to solve these horrendous crimes and bring the perpetrators to justice. But I also believe that we as a township and as a community can do more to address these issues.
Tonight I assembled a bi-partisan group of elected officials, community leaders, and clergy members in the areas affected by this violence. This group will work together to come up with strategies and resources to address violence in our communities, assist in communicating with residents, and identify and utilize external resources to provide guidance in coping skills, and crime prevention.
I want to be clear. Elected officials, clergy, and leaders in the community can provide direction on these issues. But this is a problem we cannot solve on our own. We need all residents to be come together and be involved in making the changes we all want to see in our communities to combat this senseless violence.
As Mayor. I am asking for the support of all township residents to come together as a community to assist in combating and curbing violence. This is not someone else’s problem. This is a problem that impacts all of us. If you see something, say something. If you have any information regarding a crime - or if you need assistance - please contact our township help and tip line at 610-734-7693. Any information provided to us will be kept confidential.
In addition, I will be hosting a community forum in early September to update the community on positive initiatives we are working on as a community. Thank you and have a good evening.
