Upper Darby residents can save rain to ‘Heal the Watershed’

Free Rain Garden Series Helps Homeowners Conserve Water

Mayor Thomas Micozzie and Upper Darby Council announce a rain barrel workshop in Upper Darby. Rain barrels and rain gardens are effective ways for homeowners to conserve on water bills and protect the region’s watershed.

The Delaware County Conservation District is partnering with the Pennsylvania Resources Council and Upper Darby Township to offer Rain Barrel and Rain Garden workshops to teach residents the benefits of these personal water quality systems.

A “Healing the Watershed” workshop will be held 6:30 p.m. Monday, May 3, at the Watkins Senior Center in Upper Darby Township.

Each workshop aims to educate homeowners on various storm water management practices that can be implemented at home to improve local water quality. Participants will learn about the sources of pollution, the problems associated with storm water run-off, and ways that individuals can protect the natural environment through the conservation of soil, water and other resources.

Participants will learn how to construct and maintain a beautiful rain garden and rain barrel. Both rain gardens and barrels help to conserve water, reduce runoff pollution, as well as reduce the potential for home flooding and mosquito breeding. Rain barrels even serve as a backup source of water during drought conditions.

Residents can register for the “Healing the Watershed” workshop online at www.delcocd.org or call the Delaware County Conservation District at (610) 892-9484.
