Drexel Hill / Upper Darby Ranked 7th Best City in Pennsylvania

Real estate site cites household income, property values, graduation rates and low crime

The real estate website Movoto.com has ranked Drexel Hill / Upper Darby as the 7th best city in Pennsylvania based on a measurement of six specific criteria, including amenities such as shopping, dining, and entertainment; cost of living; crime rate; education; median income; and home values.

“Those of us who live in Upper Darby have long known that our township is a great place to live, work, raise a family and run a small business,” said Upper Darby Mayor Thomas N. Micozzie. “It is good to see Upper Darby getting the type of positive recognition it deserves.”

In conducting its analysis, Movoto collected data from Pennsylvania’s 50 most populous cities and then ranked those cities on a scale of 1 to 50. Among the highlights, Drexel Hill ranked 7th in the state for its high median household income of $66,000, which Movoto says exceeds the state average by 33 percent. Despite what people may think by watching or reading the news, Upper Darby ranked as one of the safest communities in the state with its low crime rate ranked 8th among Pennsylvania’s 50 largest cities. In addition, Upper Darby’s high school graduation rate exceeds the state average by more than 9 percent.

“We have a lot to be proud of in Upper Darby,” said Micozzie. “This ranking reflects the hard work of many local residents who work tirelessly to make this a great place to live and are always working to improve the quality of life here in our town. As the nation emerges from the economic recession, I believe Upper Darby is well-positioned for future growth with a number of new businesses locating here that will help boost employment and grow the township economy.”

Movoto’s report highlighted Upper Darby’s rich history, noting that it is a former Swedish Colony that was once called New Sweden. The site called Upper Darby an “idyllic town straight out of the past,” highlighting The Swedish Log Cabin on Creek Road as possibly the oldest log house in North America and the historic Thornfield home where famous abolitionist Thomas Garrett (which Garrett Road is named after) once lived. Movoto also highlighted the fact that home values in Drexel Hill/ Upper Darby are 39 percent higher than the rest of the state.
