As of 2017, there were 82,912 people and 30,312 households residing in the township. The population density was 10,580.8 people per square mile. There were 34,322 housing units at an average density of 4,361.6/sq mi (1,683.8/km˛). The racial makeup of Upper Darby was 48.9% White, 33.8% African American, 12.3% Asian, 0.1% Native American, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.52% from other races and 2.8% from two or more races. Hispanics or Latinos of any race were 6.0% of the population.

There were 30,312 households out of which 23.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them and 7.5% under the age of 5. The average household size was 2.73 and the average family size was 3.23.

In the township the population was spread out with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 32.8% from 25 to 44, 19.9% from 45 to 64 and 13.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 91.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.

The median income for a household in the township was $52,979. The per capita income for the township was $26,599. About 14.2% of the population were below the poverty line.
