Fire Safety Inspection
Fire safety and prevention is one of Upper Darby’s most important priorities and responsibilities. In accordance with Ordinance No. 3118, fire safety inspections for commercial properties are required on a regular basis.
When the application and payment are received, the Upper Darby Fire Department will conduct an unannounced Fire Safety Inspection. As per Upper Darby Township Ordinance 302-1, Adoption of International Fire Code. The 2015 edition of the International Fire Code, as published by the International Code Council, or such later edition as the Board of Commissioners may adopt and approve from time to time by resolution, is hereby adopted and incorporated herein by reference as the Fire Code of this Township. What are some common violations that are found during a fire safety inspection?
- Make sure that all fire protection systems and equipment (fire extinguishers, fire alarm system, sprinkler system, kitchen hood system) are up to date on their inspections and that the annual inspection records have been submitted to the fire department.
- Maintain a 30" clearance in front of and clear access to all electrical panels.
- All utility rooms and rooms where fire protection systems are located must be properly labeled with a sign.
- All open electrical boxes and switches must have cover plates.
- The use of extension cords and multi-plug adapters. (UL listed multi outlet strips with circuit breakers are acceptable)
- All fire doors must be maintianed and not left propped open. No use of door openers or wedges.
- Make sure all secondary exits are properly marked and that illuminated exit signs are working properly.
- Remove obstructions and/or combustible materials from exit ways, stairways, and fire escapes.
- Provide approved address identification for the building including the suite number or unit, plainly visible, with contrasting background, to the front and rear (if applicable) of the building.
- If you have a fire alarm system that reports to a monitoring company, your property must have a Knox Box
