Contractors
The list of licensed contractors (at
the bottom of this page) is made available
to residents of Upper Darby Township to
aid in the choosing of contractors. The
Department of Licenses and Inspection will
publish updated lists of contractors
licensed to do work in the Township. The
list will be posted at the municipal
building, public libraries, senior
centers, state legislatures offices, and
here on the web site.
The Township is not endorsing any of
the contractors on this list, but simply
providing the public with a better means
to choose contractors. It is illegal for a
contractor to perform any work in the
Township without being currently licensed
and insured. It has been the experience of
the Township that most of the complaints
received from residents about poor work is
performed by unlicensed contractors.
Besides requiring all contractors to be
licensed, the Township also requires
building permits to be applied for before
specific types of work is done (see
the Permits page). Work that
requires permit approval from the Township
includes but is not necessarily limited to
the following:
- Installation of
roofs or siding;
- Replacement of curb
and sidewalk along public
streets;
- Installation of
decks, porches or patios;
- Installation of
above or below ground
pools;
- Installation of
sheds or garages;
- Installation or
expansion of driveways or parking
lots;
- Additions to
properties;
- Alterations to
properties, particularly work that
includes removal or installation of
walls;
- Conversion of
basements, garages or attics to a
family room, bedroom or similar
use;
- Major structural
repairs to buildings including
replacement of joists or
columns.
- Repair or
installation of any electrical
systems;
- Replacement or
installation of plumbing, heating or
air conditioning systems;
- Construction of new
residential or commercial buildings;
- Demolition of a
structure;
The resident should request to see the
permit from the contractor to verify that
a permit has been issued. The Township
will verify when a contractor applies for
a permit whether their contractor's
insurance is current. It is recommended
that if work performed by a contractor
does not require a permit, property owners
should still verify whether the
contractor's insurance is still current.
Residents and business owners are also
advised to enter into a written agreement
with a contractor before having work done
on their property.
