Mayor Micozzie: Two New Brand Name Hotel Projects Set to Break Ground in Upper Darby in 2017
Comfort Suites and Holiday Inn Projects estimated to create about 70 full-time jobs,
37 part time jobs and more than 180 construction jobs

UPPER DARBY, Pa. Upper Darby Mayor Tom Micozzie announced today that he expects two brand name hotels a Comfort Suites by Choice Hotels International and a Holiday Inn by International Hotel Group (IHG) to break ground in Upper Darby Township in 2017. The Comfort Suites and Holiday Inn would be the first brand-name hotels to open in Upper Darby Township.

"The decision by two major hotel chains to open establishments here in Upper Darby is another example of our success in attracting new businesses to the township," said Mayor Thomas Micozzie. "The Comfort Suites and Holiday Inn will add new amenities to our township while creating new jobs in the hospitality and construction industry and adding to our tax base. This is a major win for Upper Darby."

The Holiday Inn will be located adjacent to the Drexelbrook Catering and Special Events Center. The 100-room, 6-story hotel is expected to create 150 to 160 construction jobs during the 12 to 13 month construction period. Upon opening, the hotel is projected to hire individuals for 31 full-time jobs and 37 part-time jobs. Upper Darby Council approved a land development application for the Holiday Inn at its meeting on Wednesday, January 18.

"In addition to serving as a draw for business and leisure travelers, I expect that the addition of a hotel will provide a boost to wedding and event business at the Drexelbrook complex," said Micozzie.

The mayor also noted that he expects Upper Darby Council to review and take action on a land development application for a proposed 100-room Comfort Suites at its February meeting. Unlike the Holiday Inn, which is constructing a new building, the developer of the Comfort Suites is proposing to retrofit an existing 4-story apartment building located at 130 Garrett Road, which is situated adjacent to the Township Municipal Building. Micozzie estimates that the project will create more than 30 jobs during the construction and renovation of the building and 35 to 40 hospitality jobs when the hotel opens.

"The proposed location of the Comfort Suites was clearly driven by its proximity to the 69th Street Transit Hub, as well as the Tower Theater, which is a popular concert destination," said Micozzie. "This fits in well with our long-term efforts to rejuvenate the 69th Street Business Corridor."

Micozzie noted that his efforts to rebuild 69th Street as a retail and entertainment destination are continuing to gain traction. In 2015, Studio Movie Grill opened a $6 million state-of-the-art digital theater complex with 9 theaters and 900 reclining seats. Other major national retailers that have opened there in a recent years include H&M, Gap, Old Navy, Fresh Grocer, Ross, and Burlington Coat Factory.
