As you are aware, Pope Francis will visit the City of Philadelphia on Saturday, September 26 and Sunday, September 27. In response to expected high demand for mass transit, SEPTA established a special schedule for the weekend with a limited number of stops along various mass transit routes.

Over the past several weeks, I worked with township staff, police and fire departments and emergency responders to develop a strategic plan to deal with the influx of vehicles and riders that SEPTA initially expected. However, just before Labor Day, SEPTA informed local municipalities that their ticket sales were much lower than expected and to put plans on hold. The following maps are what the Township staff currently propose in the way of road closures and adjusted traffic patterns for the Papal weekend.

As the Papal weekend approaches, township staff and I will closely monitor SEPTA ticket sales and attendance projections. If additional road closures or other precautions are needed, we will respond as appropriate and communicate with residents through the township website (www.UpperDarby.org) and the township's community alert system via text notification.

I encourage residents, if they have not already done so, to sign up for the Delco alert system. Delco Alert was designed to help strengthen local government communication efforts and enhance safety. Delco alert is your personal connection to real-time information and updates. You can register for Delco Alert by going to https://delco.alertpa.org .
