Winter 2012 Programs
Youth Basketball – (Fall)
Geared for 4th, 5th, and 6th graders, this program concentrates on basic skills, game concepts, and team play. It is typically a two-hour program held on Saturday mornings.
Youth Martial Arts – (Fall, Winter, Spring)
Offered in cooperation with Daniel Pope Karate Institute, this is an exploratory course, which provides an introduction to the Martial Arts. It includes the basic concepts of fitness, forms, self-defense, and kicking. This course is designed for boys and girls ages 8 to 15 years.
Women’s Fitness Aerobic Kickboxing Program (Fall, Winter, Spring)
This program is a women’s fitness aerobic kickboxing program taught by renowned champion Daniel Pope. It is geared to women 16 years and older, and also includes stations in pilates and yoga. The one-hour class is upbeat and exciting and has goals of improved cardiovascular fitness and weight loss.
Adult Walk-er-cise (Fall, Winter, Spring)
This popular activity is a combination of walking and exercise set to music in an enclosed environment. It is offered to Beginner and Advanced adult walkers. Classes include warm-up, walking to a beat, stretching, standing exercises, aerobic walking, and cool down. It operates one a week and is 45 minutes in length.
Nerf Soccer – (Winter)
The indoor Nerf Soccer Program is available to boys and girls ages 5, 6, and 7. It is an introductory activity to the popular world of soccer. It includes clinic work and teams play on Saturday mornings January thru mid-March. One-hour clinic/games are scheduled weekly at three different locations. Youngsters are placed on teams and receive a team shirt. This program is very popular as it continues to stress basic skills and teamwork.
Women’s Basketball League – (Winter, Summer)
The Women’s Basketball League has been operating for over thirty (30) years. Since its inception in the summer of 1972, as an outside league at Observatory Recreation Area, the league has afforded the opportunity for local post collegiate stand-outs as well as area basketball enthusiasts to compete in a well-organized and structured setting. Now held in indoor facilities, the league is well recognized and attracts talented players during both the winter and summer seasons.
Discount Ticket Sales Program – (Year-round)
Upper Darby Department of Leisure Services has participated in the PA Recreation & Park Society (PRPS) Ticket Program since 1994. This is a cooperative effort between PRPS and local recreation agencies. Tickets are offered at discounted prices to the public providing substantial savings and avoiding lines at individual attractions. The community is able to purchase the tickets at the Department of Leisure Services office and save time and money! Tickets to regal Movie Theaters and the Adventure Aquarium are available year-round. Ski tickets are available during the winter season for Camelback, Blue Mountain, and Big Boulder/Jack Frost. The Summer Discount Ticket offerings are bountiful! Tickets to over 14 different area attractions are available, including Dorney Park, Clementon Park, Hershey Park, Morey’s Piers, Six Flags, Sesame Place, the PA Renaissance Faire, and others. The Leisure Services office remains open until 7 p.m. on Fridays Memorial Day – Labor Day as an extra service for community consumers.
Playground Program - (Summer)
The Summer Playground Program holds the distinction of being the longest running program within the department. Withstanding the test of time, it remains popular and serves the Upper Darby Community well. The program is currently a six-week recreation playground experience. Leaders supervise arts and crafts, sports, games, field trips, and special events. Approximately 9 youth lots (ages 6-14) and 14 tot-lots (ages 3-6) are available.
Art Workshop – (Summer)
The Art Workshop is an enrichment program offering instruction in drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, and other media. It is offered for children ho have completed grades 3-8 and is held daily over the course for five (5) weeks.
Instrumental Music, and Voice – (Summer)
Individualized instruction in very small groups makes this popular program appealing. Lessons offered twice weekly for six weeks. Instruction is available on all band instruments, piano, acoustic guitar and voice.
Naylor’s Run Nature Camp – (Summer)
This program utilizes one of Upper Darby’s greatest natural resources, Naylor’s Run Park. This environmental-based camp includes field studies covering birds, insects, wildflowers, forest and stream ecology, geology, and tree identification. It operates in two one-week sessions each season.
Youth Tennis – (Summer)
Beginner level instruction in all aspects of the game, from basic stroke work to match play and strategy. This program is five weeks in length with daily one-hour classes based on age. Available to boys and girls ages 8-18.
Camp Friendship – (Summer)
A creative and innovative program designed for special needs children, ages 5-21, who are currently enrolled in special education. Staffed by professionals, this six-week day camp provides academic remediation, arts and crafts, recreational games, swimming, cooking, and computers. The participants also have the opportunity to attend Summer Stage Children’s Theater and in addition, present a production of their own for family and friends as a culminating activity.
“Bee Fit” – (formerly Couch Potato Rehab) (Summer)
An innovative program for boys and girls ages 8-12 who want to have fun while learning to be healthy. This camp promotes a healthy lifestyle through fun, food, and fitness. It operates through the cooperative efforts of Upper Darby Township and a grant received thru the State of Pennsylvania.
