John B. Rankin, Jr.

I have lived in the Westbrook Park section of the township for 60 years, after having lived for one year in Philadelphia with my parents after birth.

During these years, I played baseball for Clifton PAL; ran track and played soccer at Upper Darby H.S.; won a 1st place prize in the Delaware Valley Science Fair at the Franklin Institute; was active in the Boy Scouts and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in 1963, and was also an original member of St. Marks Lutheran Church in Clifton Heights.

After high school, I attended Widener University as a Pre-med/ Education major, graduating in May 1970. I received the JJ Storlazzi Award at commencement for Superior Scores in the Graduate Record Examinations.

I began my career as a science teacher in the Rose-Tree Media School District from 1970-1979. I continued my career in the Ridley School District in 1980 as a science teacher and for the last 11 years of my employment as the Dean of Students of the High School, retiring in 2004.

In the community, I have been an active member of the Primos-Secane Westbrook Park Fire Company for 42 years. I have held all ranks from Engineer to Chief, and as an Assistant Chief/Chief for 31 of those years. I am quite proud of my service to the Township in this capacity. I have also chaired fund drives in the community for the Heart Fund, American Cancer Society, and am actively involved in the Township’s Caring and Sharing Program for less fortunate individuals, providing meals and gifts during the holiday season.

Probably the accomplishment of which I am most proud is the fact that I raised I my two children as a single parent, upon the death of my wife in 1986. At that time, my daughter Katie was 7 and son Kevin was 4. Today, I can proudly say that my daughter is a reading specialist at Primos Elementary School, after having graduated Magna Cum Laude from Penn State University, and with honors from Cabrini College with a Masters Degree in Education. My son is a career firefighter in the Township, currently working at Station 37, after having attended Delaware County Community College and the Philadelphia Fire Academy.

I became a member of the Upper Darby Township Council in June of 2007, replacing Marie McCaffrey as an At-Large member. In January of 2009, I became the 2nd District councilperson, fulfilling the term of Tom Micozzie, who became our mayor.

District 2

My priorities as a councilman for Upper Darby Township are as follows:

  1. To keep Upper Darby as a great family community in which to live
  2. To address the needs, concerns, and aspirations of all the residents of the Township
  3. To keep spending in check, making the best use of available funds
  4. To keep a particular emphasis on public safety for our citizens
