Jacob A Bierling Jr.
I was born in Philadelphia and attended Our Mother of Sorrows Elementary school through seventh grade. In 1961 we moved to Clifton Heights where I attended St. Eugene’s school in Primos. I attended Monsignor Bonner High School in my freshman year and then transferred to the newly built Cardinal O’Hara High School which is where I graduated from in 1966. I then went to work for a plumbing contractor until 1967 when I entered the United States Air Force and was stationed at Andrews Air Force Base. In 1969 I volunteered to go to Viet Nam where I served in the 555th Red Horse construction Squadron. I was awarded the Air Force Accommodation Medal during this time. I returned to Pennsylvania after being Honorably Discharged from the USAF in April 1971.
After my return to the States I married my high school sweetheart Noreen in January 1970. We have lived in Upper Darby for the past 40 years. First in an apartment in Drexel Hill for 1 year before purchasing a home in 1972 in the Primos section of Upper Darby, where we raised our three children Jack, Lynn and Colleen. In 2002 we moved to the Drexel Hill area. Two of our children also live in the Drexel Hill area, Jack and his wife Kelsey (Purnell) and Lynn and her husband Chris Vlot. Colleen and her husband Scott Hall live in Ridley Township. We have eight grandchildren.
I became a member of Plumber’s Union Local 690 in September of 1971 starting as an Apprentice, Journeyman, then becoming a Master Plumber. I have been a member for 40 years. I have been a licensed Real Estate agent for 30 years. I graduated from Delaware County Community College in 2007.
In 1991 I started working for Upper Darby School District as a Mechanical Services Foreman. I was the Master Plumber of record for the school district. I soon became the Coordinator of Mechanical Services and in 2002 I became the Assistant Facility manager. I held this position until 2006 when I became the Supervisor of Transportation for the school district, which is my current position.
I have been a Republican committeeman for over 30 years. I was the Chairman of the Upper Darby Historical Commission for a number of years before resigning in 2006. I have been on the Upper Darby Zoning Board since 1993 serving as chairman for about 16 years until I resigned December 30, 2011.
While living in the Primos section of Upper Darby I coached in the Clifton Heights PAL little league when my children were young. I have been involved in the Knights of Columbus for over 40 years serving as Grand Knight 1986-88 and also as President of the De La Salle Home Association in 1998. During this time I worked on a number of charitable events. I am presently a member of the AMVETS Post 118 in Morton PA.
I look forward to the challenges of my new position as a Councilman At-Large of the Upper Darby Township Council. I believe that Upper Darby is a great place to live, work and raise a family and I would like to keep it that way.
